This Newspaper mainly fact but is based upon the facts available to the press at the time of the earthquake. There is one thing to note: During 1906, Plate tectonics and the Richter scale had not been drawn up. (I think it's time for another poll...)

MARTIAL LAW WAS declared today by San Francisco Mayor Eugene Schmitz and General Frederick Funston. Police have been ordered to fire on all looters after the terrible event which took place yesterday.
Yesterday, at 5:12 AM, the city of San Francisco was shaken by a massive quake, registering about 8 on the Richter Scale. From Oregon to central Nevada, this quake, said to be one of the strongest in the history of San Francisco, was felt.
The earthquake was caused by the two tectonic plates, the North American plate and the Pacific plate grinding into each other. This caused massive vibrations, centred at the so called 'epicentre' of the earthquake, on the San Andreas Fault line, extremely close to the city.
Even now, Fires still rage unchecked across the city, spurred on by the leaking gas mains. Refugees, amongst them some of the towns richest residents have began to set up camp fires, many of which have got out of control. We are also hearing that arson is becoming a serious problem as looters raid and burn the city. Fire-fighters say they cannot get enough water yet to control the blaze.
The official death toll is now 478. The Daily globe's san Francisco correspondent said earlier today that he estimated that the death toll was maybe even as high as 5000. Authorities reject claims that the true death toll is being covered up.
The economy of San Francisco, previously one of the strongest in the world, has now been thrown into jeopardy.
Police advice to the citizens of San Francisco is to make your way to one of the refugee camps. If you intend to re-enter your house, you must make it clear that it is your house which you are entering to all police personnel in the area.

Golden Gate Park, the Panhandle, and all the beaches from Ingleside to North Beach are submerged in a sea of tents as the 300,000 now homeless people attempt to find shelter for the night.
An estimated 75% of the population of San Francisco are now homeless as a result of this massive quake. The army has stepped in to help build eleven refugee camps. Builders say that the city will not be rebuilt until well after 1907. The refugee homes can be rented from the government at 2$ per year.
The 5,610 houses, designed by John McLare, are only for the people most in need of housing. The city will take many years to get back to normal.
